Research directed at fashion goes beyond assessments of this year’s hem length or fabric patterns – design researchers study the cultural and economic aspects of fashion, trend developments, and many other topics.
How is successful furniture design created? What are the workings of the world of furniture design, and where does a furniture designer find inspiration? Those are some of the themes that are addressed by design researchers in the field of furniture design.
Theme: Strategic Design
Strategic design is about general problem-solving, methods, planning and management, and typically the focus is on developing innovative strategies in private companies as well as public institutions.
Theme: Design Research in Companies
Design research can be an important catalyst for innovation in companies. Design research can act as driving force for companies to pick up important new knowledge and apply it in their product, service and organisational development.
Theme: Society, Innovation and environment
Design research can help generate innovation in society and offer solutions to problems associated with environmental and welfare issues. The growing popularity of electric cars, innovative waste management, and the capacity of design research for generating innovation in society are just some of the topics that design researchers study.
With regard to light, design researchers are especially (but not exclusively) interested in daylight. How can it best be utilised in a room? How can we shield off direct sunlight and heat while still letting in enough daylight? How can light sources be integrated in furniture? And could light be interactive? These are just some of the questions that light research is attempting to answer.
