Architect

Lisbeth Gasparski is an associate professor in the Institute of Design and Communication at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture.

Lisbeth Gasparski teaches on all levels of the master’s degree in architecture in the design department of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture. In collaboration with Associate Professor Steen Ejlers she is in charge of education in the field of graphic design.

Graphic design in an architectural degree programme includes several disciplines that share an application-oriented focus:
(1) Wayfinding is about helping people navigate, for example in hospitals, in airports or in cities through signage, the position of rooms in relation to each other, etc.
(2) Original typeface design addresses both aesthetic and functional aspects of typeface design, including the adaptation of typefaces to various technical and material conditions. For example, it makes a big difference whether the characters are to be printed in a book, presented on a screen or carved in stone.

In her educational approach Lisbeth Gasparski emphasises the need for the students to master the craft aspects in order to fully grasp the anatomy of the typeface, that is, how typefaces have evolved throughout history.

In the period of 1999-2002 Lisbeth Gasparski carried out the research project Tranquebar – cemeteries and grave-monuments together with art historian Karin Kryger. As part of this endeavour Lisbeth Gasparski and Karin Kryger measured and recorded the old cemeteries and grave-monuments in Tranquebar, the former Danish trading station in India, and studied the personal histories behind the grave stones. In 2002 they published the book Tranquebar – Kirkegårde og gravminder, and in 2003 it was released in English: Tranquebar : Cemeteries and Grave-Monuments.

Lisbeth Gasparski was the graphic designer for the three-volume publication Kunstakademiet 1754-2004  (The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts 1754-2004), which was published in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the academy in 2004.

In addition to her work as an associate professor Lisbeth Gasparski is the artistic director of Selskabet for Kirkelig Kunst (Society for Ecclesiastical Art). Here she acts as an advisor to parochial church councils all over Denmark in questions concerning the maintenance and new acquisitions of equipment, furniture and art for church buildings.

Lisbeth Gasparski graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture in 1971.
