Eva Knutz is a PhD scholar in the Department of Communication Design at the Kolding School of Design.

Eva Knutz’ PhD project has the working title Spilbaseret design med fokus på pædiatriske patienters emotionelle værdier (Game-based design with a focus on paediatric patients’ emotional values). The project addresses how game-based design can be used to map young children’s emotions during hospitalisation. Eva Knutz explores this topic through her computer game Child Patient Game, which she developed in close cooperation with the children’s ward and the research unit at Kolding Hospital.

The theoretical reflections and analyses in Eva Knutz’ PhD project revolve mainly around the concept of emotions, plot theories and narratives.

Eva Knutz uses the concept of emotions to define, categorise and visualise feelings. In the article Measuring and Communicating Emotions Through Game Design she describes how she relies on theories about emotions (emotion research) in her work as a designer, and how she uses this knowledge as a building block in constructing her game design. The article also highlights the potential for seeing computer games as a communication tool. In her article Fictional Emotions Within Emotion Driven Design (in preparation) she addresses imaginary emotions in emotion-driven design and examines how emotions develop in game design over time.

The PhD project takes an interdisciplinary approach. It has obvious healthcare-related objectives, as the healthcare sector needs new methods for optimising the communication with younger children. At the same time, practice-based research through design (i.e. the development of new knowledge through the development of new designs) has a crucial impact on the development of the computer game.

Eva Knutz graduated from Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Department of Fine Art) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (1992-97). During her studies she did a one-year exchange programme at the Cooper Union School of Art, Design and Science in New York, USA (1995-96). In addition she has an additional two-year degree (Master of Fine Art) from the Frank Mohr Institute, Department of Digital Media and Environment, Hanze Hogeschool, Groningen University in The Netherlands (1997-99). In 2000-2008 Eva Knutz worked as an independent artist and designer based in Amsterdam. She has been associated with the Kolding School of Design since 2008.
