Editorial: New Conditions for Design Research
2012 brings new opportunities for the Danish Centre for Design Research. There continues to be a need for a broadly based coordination of design research in Denmark with the purpose of realising the considerable potential of the research.

Design as Innovation Facilitator
Strategic DesignDesign-driven innovation in companies can result in both actual product development and the development of processes and business strategies. That was one of the points made at the workshop Design Driven Innovation – Organizing for Growth held at the Kolding School of Design in December 2011. Furthermore, the role of the position of design in relation to the individual company or organisation was emphasised.

Design Research for All
The design research journal Artifact has been transformed from an expensive print magazine to an online Open Access journal. The relaunch is consistent with a general trend toward free access to research knowledge and, editors Ida Engholm and Charlie Breindahl argue, also holds benefits for researchers.

Talking Textiles
Anne Louise Bang successfully defended her Industrial Ph.D. dissertation on 12 May 2011 at the Kolding School of Design, Denmark. Among other elements, her project involved the development of a game to help the many different participants in a design process develop a shared language and a shared understanding of textiles and their properties.

Bio-Composites
Bio-composites are incredibly diverse and have great aesthetic potential as well as a variety of eco-friendly qualities. Bio-composites are materials composed of biological fibres and a bio-degradable type of plastic: PLA. Bio-composites are not a new invention, but their design potential is expanding as they are being used for new purposes and in new contexts. A project at the Kolding School of Design examined the feasibility of using bio-composites for wall and ceiling panels in the “super hospitals” that are currently on the drawing board around the country.
