Purpose

The purpose of the master's programme is to match the altered conditions that face the design profession today. Previously, the role of design and designers was focused on the specific task of giving form to objects, but today's designers have to manoeuvre in new contexts in a rapidly expanding, knowledge-intensive field, where design is an element in cross-disciplinary and strategic processes.

Hence, designers can no longer afford to focus mainly on the specific design aspect but increasingly have to act also as strategists, consultants, managers, innovators, facilitators and producers. Thus, the essential goal of the master's programme in design is to expand the repertoire and experience-based approaches of professional designers with new relevant theoretical knowledge and methods that are appropriate for contemporary practice conditions.

Objectives

On a scientific basis, the programme aims to enable the participants to:

  • manoeuvre in complex professional contexts with increased professional competencies and insights
  • present design issues and document processes and solutions verbally and in writing on a highly qualified level
  • situate, analyse and carry out design assignments in relation to current social, economic and cultural contexts
  • understand and apply a wide repertoire of methods for planning and managing design processes – from preparation to business
